Timothy Murphy, Ph.D.

Director of Neuroscience and Translational Psychiatry

Timothy H. Murphy is a neuroscientist at the University of British Columbia whose research explores brain circuits in health and disease using advanced imaging and neurophysiological tools. His work focuses on understanding neural plasticity and circuit dynamics following injury or in neurodegenerative conditions. Murphy’s lab also develops open-science platforms that integrate multimodal data across scales. Recently, his team has expanded into synthetic data and AI-driven projects in psychiatry, creating new frameworks to model behavior and mental health.

Joseph Tham, M.D.

Director of Clinical Psychiatry

Dr. Joseph Tham is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, as well as the Department representative and key liaison serving on behalf of the clinical faculty on the Faculty of Medicine Clinical Faculty Advisory Council. In this role, he has been responsible for advocating for the broad interests of 700+ clinical faculty. Dr. Tham is very active in both teaching and research activities. He is a specialist in neuropsychiatry, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), neurostimulation, ketamine treatment, and is currently the ECT Coordinator at UBC Hospital, the Physician Lead in the Alder Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and also the Associate Medical Manager for the BC Neuropsychiatry Program.

Sophia Frangou, M.D.

Director, Translational Neuroimaging and Neuroinformatics Lab

Dr. Frangou, MD, PhD, FRCPsych, FRCPC, is UBC President’s Excellence Research Chair in Brain Health. Her works advances precision neuroimaging and AI-enabled prediction in severe mental illness. She leads the CentileBrain Project, which is a global initiative providing normative benchmarks for brain structure and connectivity across the lifespan and supports personalised atypicality profiling. She chairs the Task Force on “AI in Biological Psychiatry” of the Society of Biological Psychiatry which promotes rigorous, clinically useful research and skills training on AI-enabled tools. She serves on the international steering committee of AMP–Schizophrenia and is an editor of Human Brain Mapping.

John Jose Nunez, M.D.

Director of Clinical Implementation and Basic AI Research

Dr. John-Jose Nunez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and the Associate Medical Director for Supportive Care at BC Cancer. He is dual trained as a subspecialist psychiatrist in cancer psychiatry and treatment-resistant mood disorders, and as a computational scientist, holding an MD and MSc in Computer Science from UBC. His multidisciplinary lab applies artificial intelligence, including structured machine learning and natural language processing, to real-world clinical data to improve mental health and supportive cancer care, spanning method development through clinical validation, implementation, and patient engagement.

Jeffrey LeDue, M.Sc.

Research Associate & Open Science

Jeff LeDue is a research associate and coordinator of the UBC Dynamic Brain Circuits in Health and Disease Research Excellence Cluster. Jeff manages the NeuroImaging and NeuroComputation Core (NINC) which is the DMCBH’s core facility focused on advanced preclinical imaging and microscopy as well as computation and data analysis. Additionally, he coordinates the Dynamic Brain Circuits and Connections in Health and Disease research cluster which brings together diverse scientists and accelerates their insights into brain circuit function by creating a stronger, more equitable and inclusive research environment: access for all to infrastructure, technology and training that embraces modern data-driven methodologies.

Federico Bolaños, Ph.D.

Project Manager & Trainee Coordinator

Federico Bolaños is the team’s local expert for advanced computing and data management. He has extensive experience with Linux systems, high-performance computing (HPC), and large-scale data handling in neuroscience research. Federico routinely supports the lab in designing and maintaining robust workflows for data backup, transfer, and long-term storage of multi-terabyte imaging datasets. His background includes developing machine learning and AI pipelines for image and behavioral analysis, as well as optimizing computational workflows to make effective use of DRAC and institutional resources.
